The lowest number of road fatalities on Mumbai’s streets in nine years were recorded in 2019. As many as 403 people were killed in 378 fatal crashes. The fatalities last year were down 15% compared with 2018 and were 28% lower than in 2011. Traffic police attributed the reduction to crash data analysis, design-oriented interventions and stricter enforcement. But motorists said increased congestion due to ongoing infrastructure projects had reduced vehicle speeds and that too was a factor in decreasing crashes.
