Mahatma Phule police in Kalyan recently arrested a 34-year-old Bengaluru-based IT engineer who posed as an ethical hacker working for the Anti-Terrorism Squad and duped several girls of lakhs of rupees by promising to marry them. According to the police, the accused has cheated atleast 25 well-educated girls employed in reputed companies across the country.Police said the arrested accused, identified as Subhankar Bannerji, is from a well-off family.The police said a woman from Kalyan had filed a complaint alleging the accused had approached her through a matrimonial website in November 2017.The victim has alleged when she had met him, he claimed he worked as a hacker for Google and the Anti-Terrorism Squad. He proposed marriage too.Soon after, he began extracting money from her on various pretexts.The victim has alleged that in eight months he took nearly Rs 7 lakh from her. Later, when they met at a hotel, he forcibly took photographs with her and started blackmailing her.On realising she had been duped, she filed a case of cheating and molestation against the accused.Prakash Londe, senior police inspector of Mahatma Phule police said, "On August 10, our team learnt that the accused had come to Mumbai. Acting on the information, we laid a trap and arrested him."An officer, who is part of the investigation said, "During probe, we learnt the accused has cheated around 25 girls across the country. He targeted them through matrimonial websites."A P Shedge, assistant police inspector said, "Of the several victims we have contacted, three have agreed to file complaints against the accused."
